Smoke Alarms
Did you know that the Fire Service are called to 72,200
house fires every year. In South Wales last year there were 1,578 house fires.
1008 of these homes did not have a smoke alarm. Only
570 of these homes were alerted by a smoke alarm.
A smoke alarm is the only thing that will wake you at night if a fire starts
in your home. Many of the deaths and injuries that happen each year could be
prevented if every family had a working smoke alarm. A smoke alarm should always
be fitted on the ceiling, 30 centimetres away from any wall or light fittings
.
Where you should fit a smoke alarm:-
Fit a smoke alarm on each level of the house.
On the landing and on the hall ceilings.
It is better if most rooms in the house were fitted with a smoke alarm.
Where you would not fit a smoke alarm:-
Kitchen.
Bathroom.
Garage.
Never remove the battery to put in toys or games. This could put your life
at risk. Change the battery once a year. Do not take the old battery out until
you have a new one to put in it's place. Test your alarm by pressing the test
button. Change your battery when the alarm starts to cheep.
