Home Fire Safety Risk Assessment
Our aim is to ensure that all people of South Wales, have working smoke alarms
and know what to do if a fire occurs.
To achieve this, local fire stations are carrying out Home Fire Safety Risk
Assessments and are fitting free smoke alarms in homes where people are most
at risk from fire. People are killed in the place where they feel most safe.
Their own homes! 8 of the 9 fire deaths in South Wales in 2001/2 were
in homes that did not have a working smoke alarm.
Each year in Britain over 17,000 people are injured and 500 people, including children, are killed in house fires. These deaths and injuries have a devastating effect on both families and local communities. Many of these fires are in homes that do not have a smoke alarm. Some of these fires are in homes that have a smoke alarm, but no battery. Many of these fires also happen at night, a working smoke alarm will alert householders and save lives. The very young and the elderly are among those at greatest risk from fire.
What is a Home Fire Safety Risk Assessment?
We will ask a few simple questions for example.
1.Are there smokers in the house?
2.Do you close doors at night?
We will then help the householder to reduce the risk of fire by establishing
a bedtime routine and an escape plan.
We will check smoke alarms and fit new 5 year batteries.
We will fit 10-year smoke alarms free of charge.
Those who are more vulnerable from fire, like the elderly or those with disabilities,
are amongst the first to benefit.
Firefighters always wear uniform.
Remember always ask to see Fire Service ID.
