Safe Frying
Did you know that 1 in 4 people who have tackled a chip pan fire have received
serious injuries? The safest way to cook chips is to use a thermostatically
controlled deep fat fryer or use oven chips. Many people still cook chips on
top of the stove. Read the following information and make sure that you cook
your family meal as safely as possible.
Cooking safely:
Never fill a chip pan more than one third full with oil.
Dry chipped potatoes with paper towels.
Ensure the oil is not too hot.
If the oil starts smoking - switch off the heat, cover with a lid and allow too cool.
Lower the basket of chips gradually into the heated oil.
Remember to switch off the heat when frying is complete.
Never leave the pan unattended with the heat on, not even for a few seconds.
If your chip pan catches fire:
Do not try to put the fire out or move the pan.
Get every one outside.
Dial 999 for the Fire Service from a neighbour's house, a phone box or mobile phone.
Do not go back inside your home until the Fire Service tell you it is safe to do so.
Remember:
Get out, Get the Fire Brigade out and Stay out!
Don't drink and fry
Many fatal chip pan fires happen after the pub closes.
It only takes a few drinks and a good film on the TV while you are waiting for the fat to heat, to put you to sleep.
Buy your supper on the way home, it's much safer.
You will increase your chances of surviving a fire in your home if you have:
At least two smoke alarms (on the hall and landing ceilings)
A fire escape plan for all the family.
