Maindee Fire Station
Staffing
Maindee Fire Station is a wholetime station which is staffed 24 hours a day,
365 days a year.
The station has 40 personnel divided into four shifts or watches and a Station
Officer in overall charge.
Location
The station is situated in Eveswell Street in the eastern side of Newport and
forms part of the South Division.
Within the station area there are:-
* major steel works
* one of the largest hotel complexes in the U.K.
* The Royal Gwent Hospital.
Specials
Due to the close proximity of the Severn Estuary Firefighters crew a 17.5 metre
rigid boat. This gives a varied training schedule for the crews to fulfil.
Also stationed at Maindee is a Hydraulic Platform. This vehicle has a working
height of 26.3 metres, enabling Firefighters to reach the many high-rise buildings
in the area.
Calls
As well as attending calls within the area, the station also provides back up
cover to all the surrounding stations.
On average the station receives a total of 1350 calls per year.
Community
The station was opened in the mid 1960s and is well established as a part of
the local community.
The Firefighters at Maindee are actively involved raising money for The Fire
Service National Benevolent Fund and local charities. To date well over £10,000
has been raised.
Included in the fund raising events have been three cycle rides, the last from
Bilbao in Spain then back to Newport (Wales) representing a total of 750 miles.
